Waste Collection Overview


  Waste collections are scheduled for Wednesday and Saturday mornings, cart-pickup-181w.jpg


  starting at 7:00 am.
  Wednesday - One (1) automated waste collection is scheduled:
o ONLY Republic Cart contents will be collected.
o Waste that is NOT in the Republic Cart will NOT be collected.
  Saturday - Two (2) waste collection pickups are scheduled:
1. Republic Cart contents (automated waste collection).
2. Heavy Trash (properly bagged/bundled trash and specific large items)
  Holiday Schedule:
  If your service day lands on Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving
  Day or New Year’s your trash will be serviced on your next scheduled
  service day.
  Resident Responsibilities    

In order to expedite waste collection, resident responsibilities include:

1. Understanding which items Republic will and will not collect.

2. Placing ONLY the items curbside to be collected on that day
(i.e. Republic Cart ONLY for Wednesday collections, etc.)

a. Obstructed, improperly placed and excluded items WILL NOT be collected.

3. Promptly retrieving carts and homeowner trash containers after collection.

4. Considerate street and cul-de-sac parking.

Please read the details in the sections below to expedite neighborhood waste collection and keep your street looking presentable.

  Cart Etiquette Quick Reference    
  Always place your cart a minimum of 3-feet from obstructions *.
    This space is required for the automated
      collection truck to safely grasp, lift and replace
      your cart
    Obstructed carts will not be emptied.
  Always place your cart 'Arrows toward the Street'.
    This is a sanitation issue.
    o The cart’s lid is designed to control the trash,
      as it is emptied.
    o Carts placed sideways or backward will empty prematurely and put your household waste onto  
      your street.  
    The correct position enables your cart’s lid to automatically close when it is returned to curbside.  
    Incorrectly positioned carts may not be emptied.  
    Always close lid
  Never overfill your cart to the point where the lid does not close.
    This is a sanitation issue.
    o The cart's lid is designed to control the trash as it is emptied.
    o An overfilled cart will empty prematurely and put your
      household waste onto your street.
    o A closed lid prevents animals and weather from scattering
      your waste onto your street.
    o Overfilled carts may be tagged and bypassed.    
    Not Recommended
  Always place your cart on a hard surface, such as your.
    Your lawn might be damaged when the cart is returned by the
      automated collection truck.
    The cart could also strike and damage a sprinkler head as it is being returned.  
    The automated collection truck will retrieve and replace the cart to the soft surface, but this  
      placement is not recommended.    
  * The typical obstacles to avoid when placing your cart or heavy trash include vehicles, mailboxes, posts, trash containers, decorative fixtures, and other carts.

    Parking Issues
  Please be a considerate neighbor and Do Not park in the cul-de-sacs on waste collection days.
    When you park your vehicle in the cul-de-sac it:
    o Blocks waste collection for cul-de-sac residents.
    o Delays the waste collection for other neighbors since trucks must
      slowly maneuver around parked vehicles.
    o May cause these large trucks to damage the cul-de-sac as they navigate around parked vehicles.

    Please be a considerate neighbor and Do Not park your vehicle:
    o Directly across from another vehicle
      o This may block the large trucks from collecting trash on your street.
    o Within 5-feet of a cart or heavy trash.
      o If your trash is blocked, it will not be collected.
  Waste collection is much faster on the blocks that do not have any street parking. Please discuss limiting street parking, with neighbors, so that all waste on your street can be collected quickly and efficiently.

Waste Collection Guidelines


Our waste collection contract is designed to accommodate most residential requirements. However there are limitations on what can be collected.

Household Waste Collection and Definition

Household waste is collected on Wednesday and Saturday - These items must be placed in the Republic Cart
for collection:



Garbage - consisting of the accumulation of household waste from food preparation.




Rubbish - consisting of paper, plastic, glass, crockery, and floor sweepings, mineral and metallic items.




Yard Waste - consisting of tree, shrub and brush trimmings; and leaves, grass or other vegetative matter resulting from landscaping maintenance and excludes items such as tree logs and large branches.


** Important: Wednesday’s collection is automated waste collection ONLY. Waste that is NOT in the Republic Cart will NOT be collected. Please do not place bags or loose items on top of or against the Republic Cart as this prevents the automated collection and will result in your cart not being emptied.

Saturday's Heavy Trash Collection and Definition


1. Up to 6 personal containers, bags or bundles of Yard Waste and/or 1 Appliance* per pick up.

o Appliances/White Goods containing chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants or Freon must have chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants removed by a licensed technician.

2. Yard Waste bundles must weigh less than 40 lbs.:

o All brush must be less than 4 feet in length, tied and bundled.

o Individual branches must be less than 4 inches in diameter, must be less than 4 feet in length and must weigh less than 40 lbs.

3. Heavy trash items must be placed within 5 feet of the curb, not blocking traffic, and not obstructed by vehicles, mailboxes, posts, and other stationary objects. Republic cart must be placed at least 3 feet away from Saturday’s bulk collection items to facilitate the automated collection.

Tree Debris Specifications:

1. Acceptable Items:

o Leaves must be bagged or in personal containers.

o Limbs and brush must be neatly stacked in bundles, weigh less than 40 lbs., must be less than 4 feet in length and no more than 4 inches in diameter.

2. Non-Acceptable Items:

o Tree trunks

o Branches exceeding 4 inches in diameter and/or greater than 4 feet in length.

Bulk/Appliance Specifications:

1. Acceptable Items:

a. Stoves, Refrigerators (*Freon/ chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants must be removed by licensed technician and appliance tagged by the technician), Water tanks (*must be drained/empty), Washing machines/Dryers, Furniture (e.g. couch, table, chair, etc.), Grills (*must have propane tank and briquettes removed), Televisions (*must weigh less than 50 lbs.)

2. Non-Acceptable Items:

a. Carpet, Construction Materials (these include, but not limited to: lumber, boxes of nails, tile, sheetrock, paneling, windows, doors, insulation, masonry debris, glass, stone, tiles, and roofing.) Pool filters, Water softeners Concrete, Steel or cast iron building materials, Dead animals. No Chemicals, Tires, Batteries

b. Hazardous Waste (anything defined as such by the EPA) and restricted items (these include, but are not limited to, batteries, tires, gasoline, paint and paint cans (except empty paint cans), solvents, petroleum products, pool chemicals, fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, medical waste, medical sharps, medication and Appliances/White Goods containing chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants or Freon.

Please take HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE MATERIALS to the ‘Harris County Hazardous Waste Facility’ 6900 Hahl Road (At 290 & Gessner) for proper disposal. This is a FREE SERVICE for all Harris County residents. Please visit their website (www.HCHHW.org) for facility hours, map, calendar and materials information.

Preparation of Bulk:

o Boxes from move-ins will be collected at the curb on heavy trash collection day (Saturday). Please break these boxes down. Packing material “peanuts” need to be bagged properly to avoid spills. Drivers will not clean up if material is loose since it can easily spill out of the cart.



Very Important!

Appliances that use chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants (such as refrigerators, freezers, and air-conditioners) MUST have this refrigerant removed by a licensed technician and the removal confirmation tag prominently attached, prior to collection.



Options for Disposing of Appliances

Most offer free pickup, but please do NOT place any charitable items curbside on waste collection days.

  You must have the appropriate items placed at the curb before 7 a.m.  
  Waste collection takes place twice a week - on Wednesday and Saturday.  
    Twice-per-week fully automated curbside household waste collection  
      utilizing Republic’s 95-gallon cart.
    Once-per-week manual curbside collection of heavy trash.  
  Holiday Schedule:  
  If your service day lands on Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day,

  Wednesday's trash removal is the fully automated curbside collection:    
    ONLY household waste items in Republic's 95 gallon cart will be collected.
    No items external to the Republic cart will be collected.
    Please reference cart placement and content requirements in the Cart Etiquette
      section to ensure collection.
    For sanitation reasons – please do not place any other
      waste items curbside on Wednesday!    
  Saturday Waste Collection    
  Saturday‘s trash removal consists of two separate collections:    
    1. The fully automated household waste collection using the 95 gallon cart.    
      o Please reference cart placement and content requirements in the Cart Etiquette    
        section to ensure collection.    
    2. A manual heavy trash collection:    
      o Please reference the Waste Collection Guidelines section for details on items    
        that will be collected and packaging requirements.    
  Residents are encouraged to keep their streets clean and presentable – please:    
    Do not place items for collection before 5:00 p.m. on the day before collection.    
    Retrieve the empty cart and personal containers on the same collection day.    
    Try to keep containers and refuse away from public view, at all other times.

  What are the Resident’s Responsibilities?    
    Appropriate proper cart placement and content to ensure collection.

    Reporting issues if the cart is damaged during a collection.    
  Why did I get a ‘tag’ on my cart, instead of having it emptied?    
    The cart tag identifies the specific issue, such as your cart was obstructed, overfilled or    
      contained heavy trash.    
  Will Republic provide an additional cart – or – can I buy one that looks it?    
    Republic may offer a monthly lease contract, directly with the resident, for the use of    
      an additional cart. The HOA is not responsible for this arrangement.    
    The automated collection truck services only Republic carts because of the damage that    
      will occur to a ‘look-alike’ cart.    
  Heavy Trash Collection    
  Can I use my personal trash cans?    
    On Saturday, personal trash cans may be used for 'Heavy Trash' collection items    
      o Please reference this document for weight and content considerations.    
  How do I dispose of my old trash cans?    
    On Saturday, tape a paper to the side of the can that is clearly visible with a message,    
      such as 'Please remove this trashcan'.    
  Association Dues and Fees    
  Why is the cart distribution tied to being current with the Annual Maintenance Fee?    
    The largest single budget item, paid by the maintenance association dues, goes toward    
      waste collection.    
  Are there any other cart fees?    
    A resident who ceases to be in good standing with the annual maintenance association    
      dues, is responsible for any waste collection start up charges, including items such as    
      cart redeployment.    
  Why wasn’t Recycling included in the new contract?    
    Recycling collection is considered a supplemental service by all waste management    
      companies. This requires a separate collection truck and distribution of a recycle cart.    
      This additional cost to Prestonwood Forest was prohibitive.    
    Numerous drop-off locations are available, and we are asking those residents, who are    
      actively involved in recycling to help keep the Recycling section of the article current.

    Residents have several methods to report trash collection issues
(broken cart, missed collection, etc.):

1. Call Republic Services of Houston at (713) 726-7300. Call Center Hours are:

a. Monday-Friday: 7 am – 5 pm

b. Saturday: 8 am – 12 Noon

2. Use Republic’s Customer Services Online Request Form.

3. Use this website's Contact Us feature to notify either:

a. The Association’s Management Company Representative or

b. The PFMA Board Member who is responsible for ‘Waste Collection’.

Computer and Electronics Recycling


Goodwill Industries of Houston. Drop-off location: 12942 Willowchase Drive, 281-758- 2664 (Next to Fiesta). Goodwill accepts computer equipment regardless of condition, monitors, and televisions and other electronics. Goodwill partners with Dell to dispose of old computer equipment.

Goodwill also resells complete systems, bargain systems, parts and vintage equipment at their Computer Works store (171 N. Sam Houston Pkwy E - near Greenspoint). For additional information about the Computer Works store: http://houstoncomputerworks.org/


Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs and Rechargeable Batteries


Lowes, Hwy 249 & Cypresswood. Lowes provides a drop off container near the customer service counter for your CFL, rechargeable batteries, and plastic bags.


Plastics Recycling


Myer Park, 7700 Cypresswood Drive - 7700 Cypresswood Drive - plastics such as soft drink and water bottle containers *

Target stores – many have recycling bins, including glass recycling at the front of the store. (Please use the Target store locator for nearby locations and to confirm bins at your store.)


Metals Recycling
